Teams dine together before showdown
A barbecue dinner sponsored by the 20/30 Club of Madera brought together the Madera and Madera South football teams’ players, coaches, and athletic directors, who sat together at tables on the Memorial Stadium field for a four-course meal.
The dinner is a tradition that stretches back to the first time the intra-city rivals met six years ago. The trophy will be awarded to the winner of Friday night’s Stadium Road Showdown game, which was won by Madera 48-30 last year.
Ryan Desmond, past president of the Madera 20/30 Club, noted that sponsorship of the dinner was an honor for all the club’s members who wanted to show players that service clubs were of importance to a community’s overall value.
“One never stands so tall as when kneeling to help a child,” Desmond said, in reference to the club’s national motto. “This is the only week of the year these two teams don’t like each other, which is how it should be. It’s going to be a fun game to watch.”
