Stallions’ Mendoza wins title
In the fourth annual Chukchansi Invitational, there was a lot to prove for the relatively young Madera and Madera South wrestling teams.
In the two-day 38-team tournament featuring some of the top teams in the section and state, both the Coyotes and Stallions wrapped up a successful showing Saturday in their hometown event as Madera placed third overall (154 points) while the host school Madera South came in eighth (126.5).
The Stallions also had 220-pound senior Peter Mendoza finish 5-0 in the tourney as he claimed the “Champion of Champions” award given to the most outstanding wrestler out of the 14 weight class winners.
Mendoza, a former heavyweight wrestler, manhandled Bakersfield’s Travis Ellebracht in the final with a 17-5 title-clinching victory...
