SELMA — Even with a depleted bench for a half, the Madera Coyotes opened the 2012-2013 season with a 51-34 victory over Mission Oak-Tulare in the opener of the 36th annual Varsity girls Lions Shootout Basketball Tournament in Selma.

Coyote head coach Jason Smith had to dole out discipline for missing practices and some players had to sit out a quarter or more so his rotations weren’t what he wanted in a game the Coyotes never trailed.

“It took us some time to get into the flow,” Smith said.

The Coyotes used an 11-0 run in the third quarter to take control of the game and held off the Mission Oak-Tulare Hawks in the fourth quarter. Both teams went cold and didn’t score for four minutes before the Coyotes closed the game with a 7-0 run for the victory...
