Coyotes let one slip away

After grabbing a 29-20 lead after the half, the Madera Coyote girls basketball team missed its next 15 shots and turned the ball over nine times as the Yosemite-Oakhurst Badgers went on a 15-0 run for a 41-36 victory over the Coyotes in Joe Flores Gym.

Even with the missed shots and turnovers, the Coyotes found themselves trailing by three with less than a minute left in the game after a Bria Fernandes 3-pointer. The Coyotes forced a turnover with a Jenny Gallegos steal, but missed a 3-point attempt and had problems fouling Yosemite at the end of the game Tuesday.

“We had a really good week of practice, but we came out and played poorly,” head coach Jason Smith said. “There were about three possessions that we actually executed the offense.”

The Coyotes may have to take off the invisible force field over the baskets as well. Madera shot just 22 percent (11-of-51) from the field and made just four field goals in an 11-point second half. The Coyotes also were 4-of-19 (21 percent) from 3-point range...
