Madera girls basketball team carried by third quarter run

OAKHURST — The Madera Coyote girls basketball team was outscored in three of four quarters against the Yosemite-Oakhurst Badgers in the first round of the Division II playoffs, but it was one quarter that made all the difference.

The third quarter defined the rest of the game for the No. 9 seeded Coyotes in a 57-47 victory over No. 8 Yosemite on Wednesday.

Madera came out of the halftime break on fire, hitting 10-of-14 shots and outscoring Yosemite 22-7. Yosemite battled back and cut a 17-point lead down to six. The Badgers outscored the Coyotes 40-35 in the first, second and fourth quarters.

“We made an adjustment to switching screens in the second half and it worked,” head coach Jason Smith said. “It was a great call by our junior varsity coach Jennifer Duncan, who was watching on the bench. That’s what makes us better is having quality coaches.” ...
