After his team played subpar basketball at the Old Town Clovis Kiwanis New Year’s Classic right after the New Year, Madera Coyote girls basketball head coach Jason Smith was looking for the players to get a spark in their final two pre-league games of the year.
It took a while to get the spark on Tuesday when the Coyotes were held scoreless through the first 12 minutes of the second half, but responded with 20 points in the final four minutes for a road victory at Los Banos.
Then, the Coyotes completed the pre-league season with a dominating victory over the Sunnyside-Fresno Wildcats on Friday, running away with a 55-27 victory.
“To their credit, the girls realized their mistakes,” Smith said. “They realized they weren’t playing with a whole lot of energy. We took a whole day off and let them be kids for a day. They hadn’t done a whole lot of that. It was needed and gave them a refresher.” ...
