Before beginning the Fresno Easter Classic on Monday, the Madera baseball team put itself right back in the thick of the County/Metro Athletic Conference championship hunt.

With back-to-back shutout victories over the Sanger Apaches, the defending Div. II section champ Coyotes improved to 6-3 in the CMAC to forge a first-place tie with San Joaquin Memorial-Fresno.

After winning 5-0 in Sanger last Tuesday, the Coyotes returned to Mel Parker Field and posted a 6-0 victory on Friday night led by starting sophomore pitcher Jonathon Mendrin and an errorless Madera defense.

“It all starts with pitching,” Madera head coach Andy Underwood said. “On the mound, we’ve been throwing strikes and we’re not walking guys, so our defense is on their toes ready to play. We’ve been fundamentally sound defensively.” ...
