Coyotes battle back in loss

Despite finishing 1-3 in the Active 20/30 Club Madera South Classic, the Madera boys basketball team showed head coach Mike Hawkins that it certainly has a lot of fight in it.

The relatively young Coyotes with only one senior on the roster proved that in a 57-49 loss to McLane-Fresno in their final game of the four-day tournament at Madera South High’s West Gym.

Madera, which trailed by 20 points midway through the third quarter, scratched and clawed its way back to trim the lead to eight points with three minutes left in the game before McLane hit key free throws down the stretch to seal the outcome. This all happened a day after the Coyotes (6-8) suffered a heartbreaking 65-63 overtime loss to the Kerman Lions.

I thought we had some highs and lows in this tournament,” Hawkins said. “I thought we played really well against Kerman. Especially compared to the first time we played them when we lost by 30. I thought we handled their pressure well the second time around.”...
