When a defender takes an offensive charge in basketball, it can symbolize the ultimate display of unselfishness and sacrifice for the team.
It’s not a stat that shows up in the box score and it’s certainly not pretty to watch when the two players collide with the defender’s back often smacking the hardwood floor, yet there’s something about that play that just ignites a team’s defensive mindset.
That was the case for the Madera boys basketball team in its County/Metro Athletic Conference game with Sanger as several Coyote players drew charges to set the defensive tone in a 44-33 win Tuesday night in Joe Flores Gym.
“Honestly, it came down to our defense won this game for us,” said Madera head coach Mike Hawkins. “Offensively we struggled, they did a good job taking away our shooters and we panicked at times.” ...
