County takes down City in All-Star game

CLOVIS — In the 58th annual City/County high school football All-Star game, it was clear after the final snap that this was more than just an exhibition game for the Madera County players.

With major contributions from the Madera, Madera South and Liberty players, the County team pulled out a 22-21 victory Friday night at Lamonica Stadium that ended the City’s two-year winning streak and restored respect from its competitive counterpart.

“Everyone was saying, ‘City this and that,’ but County showed up and punched them in the mouth and they weren’t ready for it,” said County team captain and starting strong safety Tyler Bates (Madera).

The County team featured nine Madera County participants that showed they weren’t intimidated by a City team full of Division I and II schools, including 2011 County/Metro Athletic Conference champion Edison-Fresno and host team Clovis, the co-Tri-River Athletic Conference champion...
