Wrestling for Missouri Baptist, former Madera heavyweight Luis Contreras placed fifth at the William Penn Open on Jan. 5.

Contreras won his first match by pin and his second match by a 10-4 decsions, but lost a 3-2 decision in the semifinals to the eventual champion.

In the consolation bracket, Contreras was pinned by the eventual third place winner. Contreras came back to win a 7-6 decision in the fifth place match.

Ashley Chavira (Madera) continues to be the sixth man for the Montreat women’s basketball team. She scored nine points off the bench in a 75-68 victory over Bryan College on Jan. 3 and followed that with a start and a team-high 10 points in a 77-48 loss to Union on Jan. 5...
