Under direction of coach Greg Ruland, Liberty tennis team goes undefeated

For the girls on the Liberty High School tennis team, all of their hard work, sweat and dedication finally paid off when they achieved a perfect record last season.

The wins didn’t come easy at first, but with the help of head coach Greg Ruland, the team transformed. The Hawks capped their Cinderella season with a victory over Strathmore to win their second straight Division V Valley Championship.

The team consists mainly of juniors. Many of Ruland’s players Ruland didn’t even pick up a racquet until high school. Hours of teaching and coaching have given the team and Ruland positive results.

“We had a lot to learn and a long way to go when we started,” Ruland said. “Most of the girls that we get have never played tennis before so we spend a lot of time teaching the girls how to play tennis, the proper mechanics and then they kind of develop from there.” ...
