Chavira, Salazar secure repeat Babe Ruth championship

Relief pitcher Christian Chavira took the mound during Madera’s Babe Ruth Championship game last week and met one of the most high-pressure situations in baseball.

With two on, no outs, and his Round Table Pizza team up 7-3 in the top of the seventh inning, Chavira walked his first batter, Central Cal Transportation shortstop Caleb Pursell, on five pitches.

That meant Central Cal’s Nate Encinar, already with two hits and an RBI, was up as the tying run with cleanup hitter Michael Berra on deck.

Chavira wasn’t fazed by the pressure, however, and threw all but three strikes in three batters as he caught Encinar swinging, Berra looking, and got catcher Nick Martinez to fly out in right field for Round Table’s second straight championship...
