Just as in its previous outing, the Madera boys basketball team battled early but just couldn’t keep up with a defending section champion.

The Coyotes, who were coming off a blowout loss to CIF Central Section Division III Hoover-Fresno, fell 59-46 to last season’s Division II champion Clovis North on Wednesday night at Joe Flores Gym.

For Madera head coach Mike Hawkins, it was the second time in a row that his team only trailed by two points in the second quarter before the game got out of hand.

“We got caught running their fast tempo and started to kind of play into their hands, which caused the turnovers,” he said. “We were getting a little bit frustrated because we struggled scoring in the second half. We have to find ways to stay together offensively." ...
