Big week for former Madera athletes

A former Coyote and a former Hawk recorded their first sacks of the season and a former Madera volleyball player was named a Tournament Most Valuable Player last week for local high school athletes in college.

Fresno City College volleyball player Toni Murphy (Madera) was named the Most Valuable Player in the Delta Classic in Stockton on Sept. 8. The Rams won the championship with a three-set win over Feather River-Plumas. In the championship match, Murphy had 10 kills and 11 digs. She also had 12 kills and 15 digs in the semifinal match.

In Sacramento State’s upset victory over Pac-12 opponent Colorado on Sept. 8, Ben Cowger (Liberty) recorded five tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and a quarterback sack. Sacramento State upset the Buffaloes with a field goal as time expired for a 30-28 victory.
