Big hits lead to Madera’s split

CLOVIS — The Madera Coyote softball team picked up a prime victory Saturday at the Clovis Easter Softball Classic, but then went a step back with a loss in the second game.

The Coyotes scored four runs in the second inning and defeated the Clovis Cougars, of the Tri-River Athletic Conference and fellow Div. I playoff opponent, 6-2 in the first game.

However, the Coyotes, who have won two games in one day just once this season, dropped the second game to Frontier, 6-3 behind a two-run home run and a three-run home run. The Coyotes are 7-9 in games played on the same day.

“We’re making progress in areas,” head coach Judy Shaubach said. “We are a much better team than Tuesday. We’re making a couple of mistakes. We had a lot more energy and playing for each other. The mistakes we made are correctable. At this time at the season, we have to be making the plays and making the pitches.”...
