After winning the District Championship in Anaheim last month, the Madera 6-under Mini Sox All-Stars team competed in the National Tournament of Champions over the weekend at Lions Town and Country Park’s softball complex.
Madera played Vacaville twice but was on the losing side of both games in the double elimination tournament that included an 8-2 extra-innings loss in the Saturday opener followed by a 2-0 defeat Sunday morning.
While Vacaville went on to battle Fairfield-Suisun for the tourney championship, Madera manager Melissa Mares was proud of her team’s accomplishments and believes having a young division like this helps prepare the girls for playing in the Bobby Sox program for years to come.
“People always ask, why do they have all-stars for this age and I say: this is where it starts,” Mares said. “When I was younger, we didn’t have it at this age. If these young girls have the talent and are willing to retain the information, then this age group is the best because you don’t have attitude on the team. We’re out here practicing for six days straight in hot weather and we didn’t get one complaint from these girls.” ...
