Valley Champions to be inducted into Hall of Fame

When the 1996 baseball season began, expectations were high with a solid crop of veterans returning.

The Coyotes won the Fresno Easter Classic in 1995, but missed the playoffs on the final game of the Northwest Yosemite League season.

Coyote head coach Dan Ascanio was determined not to let that happen to the 1996 team. However, things were not going as smoothly as he wanted so he went to drastic measures to change the team.

“In the beginning, the team wasn’t gelling,” said 1996 third base coach John Fernandez. “Dan put them into the old announcer’s booth and told them not to come out until you’re a team. After that, they changed with each other. They were a team of blue-collar guys. They worked extremely hard and competed every game. They were a lot of fun to be around.” ...
