This Mother’s Day, wear her flower

May 8, 2019

In the United States, we celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May, which is this coming Sunday. This is a special day to honor our dear mothers. Throughout the world, Mother’s Day is celebrated at various times of the year.

A Mother’s Day tradition I remember as a child was to wear a flower, usually a carnation or a rose, to church on Sunday to honor our mothers. Daddy would buy flowers for each member of our whole family to wear on Mother’s Day. The tradition was to wear a red flower if your mother was still living, and a white flower if your mother had passed away. In our community church, many people wore flowers on Mother’s Day.

I like the tradition of wearing a flower to honor my mother, and I would like to see others honor their mothers in the same way. Everyone can wear a flower on Mother’s Day, since everyone has a mother, living or dead. My mother passed away in 2016, and so on Sunday I will be wearing a white flower to honor her memory.

This past Sunday I was talking with someone at church about the upcoming Mother’s Day, and I told her about this tradition of wearing flowers to honor our mothers. I offered to bring her a flower so she can wear it to honor her mother who has passed. I think I shall try to get others in our church to wear flowers, too.

Let me wish all mothers an early “Happy Mother’s Day,” and I thank each of you for giving birth to your children. You are blessed by God to be a mother and also to have a mother.

So, honor your mother this Sunday, and thank God for His great love. Remember to wear a red flower if your mother is living, and a white flower if she has passed away.

— My love to all,

Nancy
