Opinion: Time changes doing damage

I think one of the best ideas that has been floated in a long time is to do away with the changing of time twice a year. This particular idea would make the whole country under daylight time all the time, with no need to spring forward or fall back.

When we lived in Arizona, it was a great pleasure to know that all time would be standard time throughout the year, with no setting of clocks forward or backward. Fruit did not spoil as much, cats slept longer, and were generally better-tempered as a result.

I have noticed that changing to Daylight Time can make you sick. On the Sunday we changed to Daylight Time this year, I got sick and had to go home from church.

A spy at Thomas Jefferson Middle School tells me that on Wednesday of this week, 130 kids had to stay home because they were ill.

When you miss sleep because of the change to Daylight Time, it does no one any good.

If you are like me and go to bed late on Saturday night, and then lie there tossing and turning because you are worried about waking up on time an hour early Sunday morning, you will find yourself dropping off all day Sunday, or you will find yourself getting sick as I did on that Sunday.

I also was ill on Monday, so Daylight Time turned out to be Double Dealing for me.

So far, I still haven’t been able to catch up on the lost hour of sleep.

Now, I know there are some who can go to bed early and catch up on that sleep as soon as their jammies are on, but I am not one of those. I have to lie there and read or watch TV for an hour or so before my eyes will close.

Anyway, let’s hope that the Congress does at least one thing right this year and memorializes the end of the semi-annual time changes into law. I know I will appreciate it, and so will my cats, although they don’t seem to have any trouble getting to sleep regardless of what time it is.
