Apaches run by Coyotes in CMAC

The Madera Coyotes boys basketball team tried to keep up with the Sanger Apaches, but when its shots stopped falling, the Apaches rolled to an 83-57 victory in Joe Flores gym.

The Apaches scored 22 or more points in three of the four quarters for a runaway County/Metro Athletic Conference victory Wednesday.

The Apaches had four players score 15 or more points They also shot well, hitting eight 3-pointers and went 16-of-21 (76 percent) from the free throw line.

“Sanger plays so hard,” head coach David Lozano said. “They were aggressor all night. They shoot the ball well. We had shot the ball well in other games. The actions and motions you get before the shot, Sanger plays downhill so well. They attack more so their threes are more in rhythm.”

Meanwhile, the Coyotes had three players in double figures, led by Kecian Primes and Zachary Roque with 12 points each. Eli Barrios added 11 points.

“They have some good athletes,” Lozano said. “So do we. We played hard in spurts. We keep preaching to play hard for 32 minutes.”

Sanger scored the first seven points of the night before Alex Trukki and Christian Aguilar hit 3-pointers to cut the lead to one.

Sanger came back with five points of their own before Roque hit a 3-pointer. Sanger scored five more points before Roque made a layup to cut the lead to six.

However, from there, Sanger was off to the races. The Apaches closed the half with five straight points for a 22-11 lead.

After Sanger scored a layup to open the second, Samuel Hass and Barrios made layups to get the lead to nine.

However, the Apaches went on an 11-0 run to increase their lead to 35-15.

Kecian Primes made four of six free throws and added a layup to get the lead down to 15, but Sanger closed out the half on a 9-1 run for a 46-22 lead.

The Coyotes tried to match the Apaches in the second half. Barrios hit a straightaway 3-pointer to open the scoring. After a Sanger bucket, Aguilar found Primes for a layup. After another Sanger bucket, Aguilar drained a 3-pointer and Barrios turned a steal into a layup to get the lead down to 50-32.

Sanger hit a 3-pointer, but Trukki answered with one of his own and added a layup. After another Sanger 3-pointer, Roque hit one to answer. He added two free throws to cut the lead to 15.

Roque countered two Sanger free throws with a driving underhanded scoop layup.

Barrios converted a 3-point play and Primes made a layup to keep the deficit at 15. Barrios added a free throw off a technical foul, but Sanger beat the third quarter buzzer with a 3-pointer for a 69-50 lead.

The Apaches opened the fourth quarter with a short bucket.

Colt Nelson got a steal and fed Hass or an open layup.

Sanger then went on a 9-2 run to get the lead to 26. Primes made a runner in the lane for the only score.

Ali Lara came off the bench for the Coyotes and drained a 3-pointer, but the Apaches closed out the game with a bucket and a free throw for the victory.
