Tesoro Viejo team raises more than $15K for heart association

For The Madera Tribune The Tesoro Viejo team raised $15,015 for the American Heart Association, receiving second place top team fundraising award at the 26th Annual 2018 Central Valley Heart & Stroke Walk. More than 2,200 Central Valley residents participated in the American Heart Association’s 2018 Heart Walk Oct. 27, the largest local event for the association.

“We are pleased to once again support the American Heart Association and commend the efforts of our team who continue to demonstrate the importance of serving our community and giving back,” said Brent McCaffrey, president of Tesoro Viejo Development.

Madera County’s newest master-planned community, Tesoro Viejo is about 1,600 acres of rolling hills and vistas. The community is situated at the foot of Little Table Mountain and has been designed to capture scenic surroundings, offering residents views of the sloping hillsides and the Sierra foothills.

People of all ages participated in the 26th annual Central Valley Heart Walk, which includes the Lawyers Have Heart Run, a 5K run, and the Central Valley Heart & Stroke Walk, a 2-mile walk. The event also included a health expo with booths on wellness, a kids zone with family activities, and healthy snack samples.

“The level of participation and support from the Tesoro Viejo team was so valuable to our fundraising efforts this year,” said Kim Chapin, Business Development Director, Central Valley Heart Walk. “It’s an honor to work with a company so committed to improving the health of our community — every year they continue to recruit more participants to join our Heart Walk, which has made them one of our top fundraising teams.”

Presented by Tesoro Viejo, this year’s event exceeded last year’s record-breaking year with a total of $355,061 raised this year. All proceeds will go toward the American Heart Association’s overall goal of funding research to find better ways to treat and prevent cardiovascular diseases and stroke while providing educational health resources to the local region.

“It is only fitting that Tesoro Viejo hosts the Heart Walk, as it has been thoughtfully planned as a healthy, sustainable community where residents can enjoy an enhanced quality of life focusing on health and wellness,” McCaffrey said.

Designed as a walkable community, Tesoro Viejo has a trail system that allows residents to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. The diverse scenic trail system will provide miles of walking, running, and biking opportunities.

Residents will also have access to the San Joaquin River connected by a trail system, allowing for residents to enjoy recreational activities.

According to the American Heart Association, walking is the simplest positive change individuals can make to effectively improve their heart health because it’s free, easy and has the lowest dropout rate of any exercise. Research has shown walking is the single most effective form of exercise to achieve heart health. The benefits of walking and moderate physical activity for as little as 30 minutes each day can help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke — the number 1 and number 5 killers of Americans, respectively.
