Former Coyote earns first honor


Courtesy of University of Pacific Athletics Former Madera Coyote cross country runner was named the West Coast Conference’s first Runner of the Week for the 2018 season after winning the Big Wave Invitational and leading Pacific to a second place team finish.

 

Jasmine Gonzalez (Madera) was named the West Coast Conference’s first Runner of the Week this season for the University of Pacific Tigers.

Gonzalez, a sophomore, led Pacific to a second place team finish at the Big Wave Invitational in Hawaii. She led a 1-2 finish for the Tigers and won the race with a time of 19:03.00, bettering her time by 33 seconds from last year.

Former Madera Tribune girls volleyball Most Valuable Player Brielle Hefner (Madera) and the Fresno State Bulldogs are off to a good start to the new season.

The Bulldogs won four of their first five matches and Hefner has played in all of them. She recorded a season-high seven kills in the season opener against Valparaiso. She has 17 kills in 10 sets this season.

In his first race with Fresno Pacific cross country, Seth Garcia (Madera South) placed 34th while running unattached at the Fresno Invitational at Woodward Park on Sept. 1.

Meanwhile, fellow freshman Veronica Ortega (Madera South) placed second on the Fresno Pacific team in 22nd place. Jonnie Montano (Madera South) also placed 33th for the Sunbirds.

In eight matches for the UC Merced Bobcats, Dominique Andrews (Madera South) has a team-high 84 kills, averaging 2.71 kills per sets. She had a season-high 22 kills in a five-set loss to William Jessup and recorded 11 kills Sept.1 against Menlo College.

Former Madera quarterback Vincent Espinoza was 8-of-19 passing for 70 yards with an interception for the Lincoln University lions in a 32-0 loss to Fayetville State on Sept. 1.

York College goalkeeper Cassandra Martinez (Madera South) has picked up two wins in York College’s first three matches this season. Fellow Stallion Makayla Martinez has also played in all three York College matches.
