Disc golf headed to Hensley

The first pro sanctioned disc golf event in Madera County will take place at Hensley Lake today, beginning at 8 a.m. and will end at around 7 p.m.

Legacy Disc and Cen Cal Series presents the Mountain Spirits event, which is affiliated with the Pro Disc Golf Association.

“We have people coming from Stockton to Bakersfield,” said Robert Castaneda, tournament director and president of Madera Disc Golf. “We have different divisions. It’s a great time. We laugh and have a lot of fun.”

Castaneda says he expects 80 to 100 players to participate in the tournament, which is also sponsored by Full-o-Bull in Madera.

“I’ve been trying to get Hensley Lake involved,” Castaneda said. “We got it and people are going to love it.”

Castaneda has been involved with disc golf for the past four years. He said the Madera club is small with about a dozen players.

“The glory about disc golf is it’s you against the course,” he said. “The course is 18 holes with two temporary holes. We’re going to do two round of 20 holes. We’re just trying to get the word out there and get people out there to have fun. My goal is to open the eyes to the community and show what they’re missing.”

He also says disc golf is a sport any age can do.

“We have a couple out of Visalia that are 80 that come out and play,” Castaneda said.
