Madera wrestlers help all-stars

Three wrestlers from Madera high schools participated in the ORCA all-star wrestling matches featuring top wrestlers from the states of California, Oregon, and Washington.

Representing Madera were Mario Moreno of Madera High School and Dylan Miracle and Augustin Garcia of Madera South High School. The event was held in Ashland, Oregon and was won by team California on March 10.

In the first dual between California and Oregon, Moreno, wrestling at 113 pounds, defeated Thomas Zomerdyk by fall at the 3:05 mark of the match. Zomerdyk was third in the state of Oregon in the 106 pound division this year.

Wrestling at 160 pounds, Garcia lost to Logan Meek, a three-time Oregon state champion, by fall at 5:22.

At 170 pounds, Miracle faced the nation’s top-ranked wrestler in Travis Wittlake Jr. In a very competitive match, Wittlake Jr. earned the decision, 12-6, but failed to earn bonus points for team Oregon.

In the dual vs. Washington, Moreno, who was fourth in the Central Section and was a match away from placing at state, prevailed at 113 pounds by defeating Tim Westbrook, 7-2. Westbrook finished third in Washington’s 4A division.

Hunter Cruz, a Washington 4A state champion, defeated Garcia by fall in 1:35.

Miracle lost to Mason Eaglin, 5-0. Eaglin is a 4A Washington state champion who has committed to wrestle for Duke next year. Miracle was fourth in the Central Section and finished off the year fifth in the state.

Moreno was awarded named West Coast All-American for going 2-0 at the tournament.
