Liberty’s Leeasia Whetsel goes up for a layup during Tuesday’s loss to Chowchilla.
The seven members of the Liberty Hawks girls basketball team stayed with the Chowchilla Tribe, but an 18-2 third quarter led to a 46-22 North Sequoia League loss at Liberty.
The Hawks shot just 13 percent from the field and made only six field goals Tuesday. They were also 0-for-19 from 3-point range.
“It’s very hard to win a ball game shooting like that,” head coach Ashley Chavira said. “We just didn’t work hard tonight. I feel like if we worked hard and had the same mentality we had last week, it wouldn’t have affected us as much as it did.”
The Hawks made just one field goal in the first and third quarters.
“If our shots aren’t falling, we mentally check out,” Chavira said. It comes with a young team and they don’t have a big basketball I.Q. It’s rough. It’s something we’re working on and trying to understand that just because we missed shots, we can’t let them score.”
Leeasia Whetsel led the Hawks with eight points.
The Hawks stayed in the game in the first quarter when Chowchilla was having just as much trouble as Liberty in finding the bucket. The Tribe made two field goals and two free throws in the first quarter. Meanwhile, Whetsel made a 3-point play and three more free throws to account for Liberty’s first quarter scoring.
Two Tribe offensive put backs gave the Tribe a 10-6 lead. Ashton Berry found Scottee Tovsrud down low for a layup to cut the lead to two.
After Chowchilla hit a 3-pointer, Devine made a baseline driving layup to get within three. After another Chowchilla 3-pointer, Devine made three-of-four free throws. Meanwhile, the Tribe hit a short jumper and a free throw for a 19-13 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Chowchilla opened the quarter with a pair of short jumpers.
Devine found Breanna Melgoza for a layup to cut Chowchilla’s lead to 23-15. From there, the Hawks missed six straight shots with three turnovers while the Tribe scored 14 straight points for a 37-15 lead.
Berry exchanged a Chowchilla free throw with one of her own Camile Vestal made a layup and Berry made two free throws to get within 20.
Chowchilla scored the next seven points to open a 45-20 fourth quarter lead.
