Man, 92, dies in crash

A multiple vehicle collision Monday night killed a 92-year-old man on State Route 152, east of Road 16, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Joseph Cox, 92, of Los Banos was driving his 2009 Honda westbound at an unknown speed about 7:30 p.m. when he struck the rear of westbound Volvo moving at approximately 65 mph. The impact caused the Honda driven by Cox to spin, and roll onto its side before coming to rest in the traffic lanes. A secondary impact by another vehicle, a 2014 Dodge pickup, ejected Cox into the center divide, where he was pronounced dead at the scene. Cox was not wearing a seatbelt, according to officers.

None of the other drivers was injured.

A third vehicle, a white semi truck with a white trailer side-swiped the Dodge pickup, causing only minor damage, and failed to stop at the scene. Officers are requesting anyone with information on the semi truck to contact the CHP office in Madera at 675-1025. That driver could be charged with hit and run, they said.

The weather at the time of the collision was clear and cold. Alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the collision but the incident remains under investigation.
