City to begin leaf cleanup Jan. 2

The Madera Department of Public Works will begin its annual leaf-cleanup project on Jan. 2.

Leaves from yards should be placed in household green-waste containers, but if these overflow, leaves may be raked into the streets, about a foot from gutters, to allow drainage.

Gutters should be clear of bottles, cans, boards, limbs, brush and rocks, which can cause severe damage to equipment and injury to workers. Leaf piles will not be picked up if they contain these items, according to information from the city.

The city will be divided into 10 sections for leaf collection. The cleanup section map may be found on the city’s website. Go to www.cityofmadera.ca.gov, then select Departments — City of Madera, then select Public Works, then select Streets, then select Annual Leaf Cleanup Program, then select Cleanup Section Map, find the number of the section you are in.

According to the city, the 10 sections have been prioritized based on past history, starting at section 9 and working clockwise to section 10. This cycle will be repeated, and if necessary a third round of pickups may be ordered by contacting the Public Works Department at 661-5466.

The city estimates the project will require eight weeks.
