Maderans in College: Gonzales leads Pacific at WCC

Former Madera cross country runner Jasmine Gonzales led the University of Pacific cross country team to a seventh place finish in the West Coast Championships.
Jasmine Gonzales (Madera) once again led the Pacific Tigers cross country team. She led the Tigers to a seventh place finish in the West Coach Conference championships in Oakland on Oct. 27. She led the Tigers with a 33rd place finish, finishing the course in 22:00.1.
Gonzales, a sophomore, led the Tigers in every cross country race this season.
Gonzalez Fresno Pacific women’s soccer player Anissia Gonzalez (Madera) is tied for second on the team in points with 13 and is also tied for second with five goals. She has played in all 16 games for the Sunbirds with 14 shots on goal. She also leads the team with 23 shots on goal.
Jordan Alvarez (Madera South) caught one pass for 10 yards in Bethel College’s 35-7 loss Oct. 28 against Southwestern College. The senior has two catches this season for 19 yards.
Former Liberty quarterback Markie Brandt completed one of two passes for Dordt College in a 41-23 loss to Northwestern College on Oct. 28. He also had a rush for a loss of a yard.
Brandt has played in five of Dordt’s eight games. He is two-of-six for 24 yards and a touchdown passing and has 20 carries for 65 yards and a touchdown.
Kris Bueno (Madera) had a season-best game in an Oct. 14 game against Bemidji State. He had four catches for 77 yards, both season highs, including his first collegiate touchdown. He has eight catches this season for 132 yards.
UC Merced cross country runner Karina Martinez (Madera South) placed seventh in the California Pacific Conference championships Monday at Woodward Park. She earned a trip to the Nov. 18 NAIA National Championships in Washington.
Brielle Hefner (Madera) continues to excel during her junior season at Fresno State. The three-time All-Madera Tribune girls volleyball Most Valuable Player is second on the Bulldogs with 243 kills while averaging almost three kills per set. She has played in all 25 matches with 22 starts. She also has 27 digs to go with 52 blocks.
Eduardo Herrera (Madera South) placed 19th for the Colorado Buffaloes in the Pac-12 championships Oct. 27. Herrera, a redshirt freshman, placed in the top 10 in his championship debut, finish the 8-kilometer race in 24:02.07 to help the Buffaloes to a second place finish, six points behind Stanford, who stopped Colorado’s Pac-12 championship streak at six.
York College women’s soccer player Cassandra Martinez (Madera South) has started all 18 matches this season, recording 96 saves. She has a 1.4 goals against average while recording eight shutouts. She is second in the conference for saves.
In an Oct. 28 game against Bowie State, Vincent Espinoza (Madera) was 10-of-25 for 106 yards with a long pass play of 43 yards for Lincoln University. The week before, Espinoza threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 25 yards.
Evan Rios (Madera) continues his excellent season with the Fresno City Rams, He has made 32-of-33 extra points and is 8-of-10 on field goal attempts with a long of 44 yards. He leads the Rams with 56 points. Rios is tied for ninth in the state in field goals made.
Alyssa Burton (Madera) has 47 kills in 15 matches for College of the Sequoias. She tied her season high with five kills in an Oct. 11 match against Merced College.
Lanaye Brewer (Madera South) has been earning some playing time with COS, playing in the last three matches. She had two kills in an Oct. 20 match against Porterville College.
Former Madera women’s volleyball player Kinsey Kerby is continuing her solid sophomore season at Merced College. She is fifth on the team with 62 kills while playing in 17 of the team’s 19 matches. She also has 98 digs, third on the team, and nine blocks.
In a 10-0 shellacking over College of the Sequoias on Tuesday, Fresno City College’s Sophia Zertuche (Madera South) scored two goals. In a 15-0 victory over Reedley College, Raina Wristen (Liberty) scored a goal and Elvira Hernandez (Madera) added a pair of goals for the undefeated Rams, who are 18-0-1 and 8-0-1 in conference.
The Rams lead the state with 116 goals scored and a group of Madera players have helped. Wristen is third on the team in points (46), goals (17) and assists (12). Jasmine Garibay (Madera South) has 24 points with eight goals and eight assists. Zertuche has six goals and 10 assists this season while Hernandez has four goals and three assists.
In a victory over Gavilan College, Merced College safety Justin Landero (Madera) had four tackles and forced a fumble. Chris Chapa (Madera) also added two tackles.
Landero is fourth on the team with 40 tackles (24 solo). He also has two interceptions. Chapa has 23 tackles this season with three tackles for loss. Also from Madera are Roy Mitchell with seven tackles and Pablo Villasana with two tackles. Also playing for Merced from the Madera Coyotes are Roy Powell and Nathaniel Nelson.
Aubry Choate (Madera) has started seven games in goal for the Fresno City Rams. She has four steals to go with 20 saves. Shelby Seybold (Madera) has started 16 of the team’s 17 matches and has six goals with three assists.
Miguel Ruiz (Madera) helped the Fresno City College wrestling team to a NorCal Duals championship with a 7-2 decision at 184 pounds on Oct. 15.
