Madera sisters Sophia and Isabella Mirelez competed in the AAU Jr. Olympics at Eastern Michigan University and came away with great experiences and some good runs.

Sophia placed fifth in the nation in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 11:30. She also placed second in her heat in the 1,500 meter run and 13th overall, out of 69 runners.

Younger sister Isabella placed fourth in her heat in the 800 meter run and placed in the top 25 in the nation out of 80 runners. She also beat her personal best by more than nine seconds.

Isabella and her 4X400 meter relay team placed 14th overall with a personal best time of 4:55.

“These girls did so well and have worked so hard that they are talking about how hard they want to work to get to that top three next year,” Mirelez’s father Juju said. “We also want to send out a special thank you to all of the families and supporters that helped these girls get to Michigan. We are very much appreciative of all the help. It means a whole lot to us and are so grateful to those who have big hearts in giving donations and sponsors.”
