Thursday reception planned to celebrate award for birthing care

Madera Community Hospital has announced its achieving a Healthgrades 2017 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award, according to Healthgrades, an online resource on physicians and hospitals.

Healthgrades will present Madera Community Hospital with 5 Labor and Delivery Awards during a 5 p.m. Thursday reception in the main hospital lobby, 1250 E Almond Ave.

“Selecting a hospital for the birth of one’s child is the first healthcare decision made as parents,” said Stell Manfredi, chair of Madera Community Hospital Board of Trustees. “By choosing a hospital recognized as a Healthgrades 2017 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award recipient, parents can take comfort.”

The distinction places Madera Community Hospital within the top 10 percent of all hospitals evaluated for the exceptional care provided to mothers during labor and delivery, according to Healthgrades.

To evaluate and compare hospital performance in labor and delivery, Healthgrades analyzes patient outcome data for virtually every hospital in the 17 states that provide all-payer state data for years 2013 through 2015.

Healthgrades claims that the variation in hospital performance makes a significant difference in terms of clinical outcomes: if all hospitals analyzed performed as well as award winners then an average of 128,302 in-hospital complications would theoretically be avoided. From 2013-2015, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award, had, on average, a 53.8 percent lower risk of a complication while in the hospital.

Since 2009, Madera Community Hospital has earned 5-Stars in labor and delivery care. This year, of the 13 hospitals evaluated in Madera, Fresno, Kings, and Tulare counties, Madera Community Hospital is one of three named in the top 10 percent, for labor and delivery care and one of eight recognized by Healthgrades with 5-Star Awards in Vaginal and C-Section Deliveries.
