Madera National rebounds with win


Wendy Alexander/The Madera Tribune Madera National’s Gilbert Moisa went 3-for-5 with three runs scored in Wednesday’s win over Sierra.

 

The Madera National Little League 11-12-year-old All-Star team bounced back from a tough one-run loss to advance in the District 10 All-Star tournament with a 15-2 victory over Sierra.

Madera National banged out 16 hits Wednesday night, including home runs from Timmy Nino and Xavier Cantu, to advance in the tournament. Madera National played at Reedley in an elimination game Thursday. With a win, MNLL plays the loser of Madera American and River Park on Friday.

Madera National manager Ray Hix was able to spread out his pitching thanks to a four-run first inning that gave his team control of the game.

The combination of Gilbert Moisa, Shane Noe, Chris Diaz and Dylan Whiteman combined for a two hitter and 10 strikeouts.

Four Madera National hitters had three or more hits, led by Sebastian Millan, who went four-for-four with four runs scored.

Madera National won its first game of the tournament, but lost a tough 2-1 game Monday to Madera American and have to advance through the loser’s bracket with three games in three days.

Moisa started Madera National off with a one-out single in the first. Tyler Zamora followed with a single and Millan drove in the first run with another single. Nino cleared the bases with a three-run home run to open a four-run first inning lead.

Sierra came back with a run in the second, but Madera National responded with three more runs in the third.

After Millan and Nino singled, Cantu hit a three-run home run for a 7-1 lead.

Madera National added three more runs in the fourth inning. With one out, Andrew Rodriguez reached on an error. Moisa singled and Zamora singled Rodriguez home. Millan followed with a run-scoring single to drive in Moisa and Millan came home when Nino reached on an error.

Sierra added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 10-2 Madera National lead. However, Madera National put the game out of reach with a five-run sixth inning.

Rodriguez led off the inning with a double and scored on a Moisa single. Zamora singled and Millan hit a run-scoring single, followed by a two-run double from Nino, who scored on a run-scoring single from Cantu.

Whiteman closed out the victory with two strikeouts in the sixth inning.
