Small business tax expo set for Oakhurst

Current and would-be business owners who would like to learn how to comply with California’s often complex tax laws can attend a free Small Business Tax Seminar and Resource Expo in Oakhurst on April 5.

California State Board of Equalization vice chair George Runner will sponsor the event with Sen. Tom Berryhill, Assemblyman Frank Bigelow, Madera County Supervisor Tom Wheeler, and the Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce.

“Small businesses are a critical part of California’s economy,” said Runner. “Our goal is to help business owners be successful by ensuring they understand California’s complicated tax laws.”

The presentations will offer aid on state and federal tax issues. Topics include avoiding common sales and use tax problems, forms of ownership, employee versus independent contractor, and record keeping. Representatives from the BOE, Employment Development Department, Franchise Tax Board, and Internal Revenue Service will conduct presentations and answer questions.

Registration for the expo will begin at 8 a.m. in the Oakhurst Community Center, 39800 Road 425B. The expo itself will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Free parking is available.
