Donut spinning reveals DUI

The sound of tires spinning on blacktop led Madera Police Officer Jaron McAlister to a motorist with open alcohol containers nearby and a suspended license.

Madera Officer Michael Powell arrested suspect Edgar Cortez on Monday “for driving nearly two times over the legal limit of 0.08 percent,” said Cpl. Josh Chavez.

A video, posted online by police, appears to show a black Mustang driven by Cortez “spinning donuts” in the intersection of D and Rush streets while nighttime traffic approaches.

“Operating a vehicle is dangerous in and of itself; adding alcohol makes for a potential deadly situation,” Chavez said.
