September 13, 2016

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Fresno County Sheriff's officials say two correctional officers who were wounded in a shooting at the jail lobby are showing improvements in their health.

The Fresno Bee reports (http://bit.ly/2c84kMt ) that sheriff's spokesman Tony Botti said Monday that Toamalama Scanlan and Juanita Davila are recovering and that Davila is up and walking around.

The unarmed officers were shot in the head and neck areas during a struggle on Sept. 3 after they approached a man who cut to the front of the visitors' line.

Thong Vang was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, possessing a handgun as a felon and bringing drugs into a jail.

The 37-year-old was released from prison in 2014 after serving 16 years for raping three girls.
