3 dead after fiery crash on Madera highway

May 27, 2016

MADERA, Calif. (AP) — Investigators are looking for the cause of a fiery crash on a Central California highway that has left three dead and has shut down roads.

KFSN-TV reports that a couple in their 60s and a semi-truck driver in his 40s died early Thursday after the crash on northbound Highway 99 at Avenue 16 in Madera, a city in the agricultural San Joaquin Valley.

California Highway Patrol officers say the couple, driving a motor home, made an unsafe lane change and crashed into the truck, which was carrying sheets of glass. Both vehicles veered right, hitting a tree before both vehicles burst into flames.

A stretch of Highway 99 has been shut down and officers hope to open at least one lane before the morning commute.
