Pot of porridge, or potpourri?

More meaningless threats. A deputy commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said Iranian forces will close the strategic Strait of Hormuz if the United States and its allies threaten the Islamic Republic. The commander’s title and name is Gen. Hossein Salami. Funny, that’s what I had on my pizza last night, generally speaking.

 

Better things are happening this Friday, the 13th, when it’s “Off to the Races” at Lumber Town at the fairgrounds benefitting the Madera District Fair Heritage Foundation. There will be a silent auction, raffles, hats and horseracing attire. To top it off you can wager on horse races displayed on large screen televisions. Tix are $40 or save some bucks to bet on when you take someone at $75 a couple. Doors open at 6 p.m. with post time at 7:30 p.m.

 

If you prefer fast cars to fast horses, I’m happy to see those good folks of Madera Classic Cars getting their cars and themselves together again with the next fun show Friday, also starting at 6 p.m. at their usual spot at the Walgreen’s parking lot on Cleveland Avenue near the fairgrounds. Come on out for a good time, good rockin’ music and see some terrific wheels.

 

Summer is coming. That’s barbecues, graduations and drive-in movies. Madera has one of the few drive-in theaters left in the state. There were once thousands of these outdoor screens. Today there is a little over 330 nationwide with, at last count, 17 in California...
