Volunteerism is one of the greatest foundational treasures our community possesses. The evidence is everywhere.

Every day in Madera our residents take the time to coach a youth sports team, volunteer at the hospital, participate in service club activities, provide mentorship, clean graffiti, and engage in myriad other activities. Maderans participate in ways to help others because they discover that true joy is derived from serving and building others, not from self-indulgence that proves to be so hollow.

When people who don’t live here ask me how “Madera is doing” I always say we are doing great because we have a citizenship that cares and shows it in the ways I mentioned as well as our community-wide service day called “Love Madera”.

On April 27, Maderans of all ages will have another opportunity to continue to demonstrate commitment to our neighbors and city through our third “Love Madera” community service day. Service opportunities will include park and trail cleanup, cleaning the Fresno River bed, cleaning up schools, donating blood, encouraging convalescent home residents, and a host of other activities.

Participant volunteers may include individuals, churches, service clubs, neighborhoods, families, or any other combination of people who would like to show their love to our community through service. Visit the website love or send an email to lovemadera at for more information regarding how you can get involved. I look forward to seeing you on the 27th, at or before 9 a.m. at Courthouse Park in Madera. Keep up the great work!

Robert Poythress,
Mayor, City of Madera
