Although several months have passed, I still want you to know what an exhilarating experience it was to read the article in this paper about my friend Fred Gartner, titled “From the Russian Front to a local McDonalds.” I was amazed by how much information Leon Emo was able to pack into this article.

Emo’s writing style reminded me of Ernest Hemingway’s style; my opinion being based on discussions during a college literature class. I believe Hemingway wrote “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” as a short story, and it was later made into a full length movie.

Talent is not always vested in “famous strangers.” I have been privileged to become acquainted with so many wonderful and gifted people of Madera throughout the years, and thanks to the Tribune we still can maintain a feeling of community. May we never take that for granted.
