On behalf of the Second Wind 5K crew, I would like to recognize the volunteers who helped the race go off without a hitch on April 26. Our race would not have been so successful without the help of dozens of volunteers and the wonderful support of Madera residents and businesses.
With the race proceeds, we were able to give more than $6,000 each to the Madera Rescue Mission and the Madera County Food Bank, two worthy local nonprofits.
We can’t thank Kenny Shepherd and Scott Sample enough for hosting our event on the LoanMart Madera Speedway and throughout the Madera District Fairgrounds. We would also like to thank the speedway’s incredible staff for all of their help with setup and cleanup, and the film production team for capturing amazing footage of our race and its speedy participants.
We would like to extend a huge thank-you to our lead volunteers who worked on planning this event for months and then saw it all come together on race day.
Kenny Crow and his crew led runners and spectators into the Madera District Fairgrounds and kept runners safe by keeping traffic away. Audrey Crow and her crew kept a steady supply of bananas, chocolate milk and water available to runners as they crossed the finish line.
Don Caballero ensured that the DJ was set up to provide start and finish line music and oversaw the awards ceremony. Melissa Nassar coordinated our on-course entertainment, which included cheerleaders and color guard.
Randall McKinney and his crew of Madera Rescue Mission disciples provided water to thirsty runners at the midpoint of the race. Linda Belmontez oversaw race day packet pickup and registration.
Emerson Carrick assisted in marking the course for the runners and organized the course monitors and volunteers.
Lupe Delgado also did us a huge favor by organizing our packet pickup at Thrive and having her Posh Makeover Movement gals and Team 100 Challengers take shifts to hand out shirts and bibs. That was a huge weight off our shoulders.
Priscilla Huerta sang a stunning rendition of The Star Spangled Banner prior to the race; she was even invited back to the speedway to sing the National Anthem that night. Elias Duran did a great job of managing our website, SecondWind5K.com, and taking tons of photos on race day.
We thank The Madera Tribune for being out in full force on race day. Columnist Farin Montanez was my co-director, reporter Mark Smith showed up to run his first 5K, sports guy Tyler Takeda was our designated race announcer, publisher Chuck Doud donated to the cause, photographer Wendy Alexander shot hundreds of photos and reporter Elsa Mejia covered the event for the newspaper.
Thank you all, and our numerous generous sponsors, for making the inaugural Second Wind 5K a success. Mark your calendars for next year; we will be back on April 11, 2015 — bigger and better than ever!
