Remembering Rotary 1977 Babe Ruth champions Just a couple of weeks ago my wife and I were at Mel Parker Field to see two of our grandsons, Eric Chapa and Issac Martinez, at the Babe Ruth League opening ceremonies. Eric plays for Breakfast Lions and Issac plays for the Elks.

While we were seeing this game, it brought me lots of memories of when my brother Oscar and I were coaching Rotary in Babe Ruth League in 1977 (only 35 years ago) and won the Babe Ruth League championship; and Rotary invited us, as their guests at Lucca’s Restaurant for winning the championship.

I remember when all of us got there they had little baskets going around on all the Rotary members tables, and were collecting money to send us to go see the Giants. But a couple of days later Mr. Darwin G. Shebelut called me and told me that through his business that he had, Shebelut Chevrolet Dealership, that was across from the post office, he had an advertisement with the Giants’ radio station and that he would get us tickets through his advertisement. And with all the money that they collected during the dinner they, Rotary, bought us new uniforms in 1978.

Players on that 1977 Rotary team were:

Randy Alexander, Alex Chapa (Eddie’s boy), Freddie Chapa (Oscar’s boy), Eddie Espinosa, Ernie Espinosa, Mike Gillilland, Brett McCullough, Wayne Padilla, Danny Pitman, David Ramirez, Manuel Rivera and Mark Rivera; Oscar Chapa, manager, and Eddie Chapa, coach.

Eddie Chapa,
Madera
