Remembering dad: Bob Kahn loved the close-knit community of Madera

Bob was born in Waterbury, Conn. and raised in New Jersey with his two brothers and sister in a humble neighborhood, one he told many humorous stories about in his adult life. He especially enjoyed talking about those old times with his brothers as they would laugh away hours recounting the “good old days!”

In high school he was active in many sports and played on the New Jersey State basketball team. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army and participated in the D-Day Invasion of Utah Beach and the Battle of the Bulge. At the conclusion of World War II he was honorably discharged with the rank of Master Sergeant.

It was shortly after the war that he met and married his wife Marion and they honeymooned by driving across the country where they established their first home in San Francisco. Bob was employed by U.S. Rubber as a territory salesman. In 1948 Bob accepted a transfer to Fresno. Shortly after the move Bob accepted a job with LeMoss and Smith Tire Co. The biggest move of his life then occurred in 1955 when he and his partner Ernie Mora opened their own tire dealership, Kahn & Mora Tire Co. in Madera.

He bought a new home on Orchard Avenue, which at that time was on the very western edge of the city limits of Madera. Bob worked extremely hard making the business successful and at the same time knew Madera was going to be his new home town. With that in mind, he spent long hours at the business, still finding time to become involved with activities that helped support others in Madera. One of the first things he did was transfer his Kiwanis membership to the Madera club and became a very active member, serving one year as president. He had over 40 years of perfect attendance and received a Lifetime Membership in the Madera Kiwanis Club...
