Thursday morning I attended a flag ceremony at Millview School. This is a very special flag donated to Millview School by a local citizen. This flag has flown over our troops in Afganistan.

The local VFW conducted the ceremony, giving a history of the flag, a three gun salute honoring fallen comrades, the playing of taps, the raising of the flag followed by the Millview third and fourth graders singing “God Bless America.”

What impressed me most was how respectfully and orderly the approximately 500 students conducted themselves while standing in the sun for the entire ceremony. I proudly commend the principal, Rosie Galvez, and her fine staff of teachers and support staff, for the organization of this excellent ceremony.

It was obvious the teachers had prepared the students to understand the importance of the ceremony and how we honor our flag. Any local citizen would have been proud of this, one of our Madera elementary schools.

What a beautiful way to begin this school year. Millview School, you certainly have my applause and respect.

Lois Yakligian,
Madera
