Words cannot adequately express our appreciation to The Madera Tribune and writer Bill Coate for the beautifully written account of our family’s God-given miracle of new lungs for our son, Matt. Mr. Coate has essentially encapsulated our 34-year journey into two pages, and no one could have done it better.

More importantly, however, is that we give God the glory for the series of miracles that made this possible, from Matt’s decision to go to Stanford for treatment of his cystic fibrosis, to being placed on the transplant list, to the sudden and unexpected availability of donor lungs — all of these have been at the hand of our heavenly father.

Matt’s recovery from surgery has been no less than miraculous as well, and he continues to astound and amaze the transplant team with this “new and improved version” of himself, which we lovingly refer to as “Matt version 2.0.”

Jeremiah 29:11 has been a rock and promise for us throughout this journey: “I know the plans I have for you, saith the Lord ... plans for a hope and a future.” And now, thanks to God’s touch, and the willingness of an anonymous donor, Matt and his family DO have a future.

We encourage everyone to consider organ donation. It is quick and easy to enroll, and is a wonderful legacy to leave behind. To register, simply go to this link:

Finally, we would be remiss if we did not publicly thank the hundreds of friends, family, and churches who have, over the years, prayed faithfully for Matt. It is because of their faith, trust, and belief in God’s power, that they share in this miracle of new lungs and new life.
