Like most Americans I spent a day last week getting my income tax return completed and, like most hardworking Californians, a good portion of my income goes to Washington and Sacramento.

I know that I pay my fair share of local taxes too and I usually feel like the money I send to the county in the form of property taxes, sales taxes, business license taxes and so on is far better spent than the money I send to Sacramento. Unfortunately, I learned that even local taxes are being wasted right here in our community, in the form of a taxpayer funded vacation for several county managers.

Apparently, next month, nearly every county department manager and their second in command are attending a two-day and two-night “management retreat” in Mariposa. I find this utterly ridiculous.

The fact that local bureaucrats have the audacity to spend taxpayer money on this sort of thing is outrageous. If the county can operate with every manager and assistant manager gone for two days, why do we need them anyway?

Finally, if such a vacation is necessary, why are local taxpayer dollars being spent outside of our county? It seems like every other day we are being asked to buy local and I support that notion but when the county decides to spend its money, shouldn’t it set a better example?
