Each year the City of Madera Beautification Committee sponsors a landscape awards program honoring Maderans for their hard work and dedication in beautifying Madera. A unanimous vote of the committee chose the Terry and Juanita Scroggins residence, 946 Paintbrush Drive, from five nominees as the residential winner of the Fall 2013 “Madera Beautiful” Landscape Awards.
The residence was nominated by Mardi Taubert, who stated, “I pass by the residence on a daily basis and it always looks well kept. You can tell the owners take pride in their lawn.”
Terry and Juanita have been in the same location since 1994. Terry does the majority of the yard work himself. Due to his current work schedule with Foster Farms, where he’s worked since 1974, Terry hired Villa Gardening to assist him with the mowing for the time being, while he continues to maintain the flower beds and bushes himself. He said he really enjoys working in the yard as it’s a great way to wind down.
Terry said, “It’s busy work, but looks good when you’re done. It is well worth the effort.”
He started doing yard work when he was a child with his mother. They were the two gardeners in the family and always had flowers and vegetables growing.
I asked Terry what advice he could give about keeping the lawn green and he said, “Don’t over water. During the heat of the summer, I water for 20 minutes three times per week during the summer and the lawn stays green.”
The next question I just had to ask was what kind of grass he has in his yard that keeps it so green. He said, “It’s a valley blend of year round green, so it does not consist of any Bermuda grass. The grass mixture consists of bluegrass, fescue… that sort of thing.”
The flowers used vary every year depending on the mood Terry is in when flower shopping. He has been using a lot of red and yellow the past few years, sometimes throwing in a little pink, just because.
Terry said, “It’s important to choose the right flower for the right location in your yard. If you will be planting the flowers in a shaded area, be sure to buy flowers that need shade. If the flowers will be in sunlight, plant flowers in the sun that requires a lot of sun.”
Starting in March 2014, be ready to nominate your friends, family, or even yourself, for the Spring 2014 “Madera Beautiful” Landscape Awards.
The Beautification Committee meets at 5:30 p.m. the second Thursday of every month at the John W. Wells Youth Center, 701 East 5th Street.
