Larry Leon Blackburn and Virginia (Ginger) Lee Beckett were teenage sweethearts when they married 50 years ago. The couple met while attending Madera High School and youth group activities at their church. Their admiration for one another soon blossomed into young love and they were married on June 22, 1963, at Grace Assembly of God in Madera. Years later they welcomed a son, Lonnie, and later, a daughter, Gina, into their family.

Larry and Ginger have been blessed with five grandchildren: Steven Perry, Jaclyn Anderson, Zechary Blackburn, Gianna Eckhardt and Marisa Blackburn, along with one great grandson, Brennen Perry. Working at local grocery stores after high school, and later receiving his contractor’s license, Larry had a dream of building his bride a home with his own hands. That dream came true in the early 1980s when they designed and built a home together.

Ginger took pride in taking care of her young family and enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom. Once her children were of school age, Ginger’s love for children extended to students with special needs while she worked as a teacher’s aide at Madison and Millview elementary schools. Ginger later obtained her license in cosmetology and enjoyed caring for clients in her at-home beauty shop.

Making memories with family and good friends has been their greatest joy. Often, holidays and special occasions are held at the Blackburn home and will include live music, compliments of Larry playing his guitar, and Ginger singing along...
