Madera Unified School Superintendent Gustavo Balderas will leave Madera to take a position in Ocean View on Jan, 1, 2013. A Tribune article on his decision to leave stated that Balderas signed a contract with Madera Unified in April 2011 that would be in effect until June 30, 2014.

I feel that if your contract is for a certain period of time, you should fulfill that contract.

So, here Madera Unified is again, searching for a new Superintendent, which means time and money spent that could be better used on education.

I understand that an increase of $50,000 annual salary was extremely tempting to him, but it seems that a person who values his promises would fulfill his obligations at the very least until the end of the current school year.

I wish Mr. Balderas and his family the best of luck, but I’m disappointed about the whole situation. In the “old days,” I was taught that you kept your word even if it had a negative impact on you, but I guess those days are long gone.

Pray that a very qualified person will be found quickly to fill the school superintendent’s position.

Barbara Thomasson,
Madera
