We should be very grateful that we hired school Superintendent Gustavo Balderas last year. He has shown his leadership again by traveling to Sacramento to meet with Tom Torlakson, the superintendent of California schools. He took the initiative to protect our afterschool programs for our children.

Superintendent Balderas used his superb tact along with the generous assistance of Assemblyman Henry T. Perea from Fresno to ensure that our afterschool program’s funding was secured.

If it was not for his compassion for our students and families, we would have lost a valuable resource in our community of Madera.

These are the types of partnerships that I have been speaking of since I’ve moved to Madera, the types that unite many communities across county lines and can have many returns to the residents of Madera County.

My hat is tipped to Gustavo, Henry T. and Tom for protecting our youth and preserving our future.

Lynn Cogdill,
Madera Unified School District trustee
