Summer swim classes offered at Madera South

As temperatures rise into the triple digits this summer and refreshing pools and lakes become more alluring, it is important for Madera children to learn water safety, local swim instructors say.

For 37 years, Randy Durbin has taught Madera youth how to swim as the program manager for American Red Cross swim lessons in Madera Unified School District.

This summer, swim classes will be held Monday through Friday at Madera South High School through mid-August. Six levels of classes are offered for students over 3 years of age based on experience, and parent-child classes are offered for toddlers.

“Everybody learns to be safe around the water and learns basic skills,” Durbin said Wednesday. “Our goal is that at the end of a two-week session, they’ll be able to hold their breath in water long enough to be rescued. Or if they fall in, they can get to the edge of the pool at least.” ...
